New Year & In Gear

Happy New Year from Shoreline Bespoke! I hope this newsletter finds you well, and I’m excited to share what we’ve been up to since the last update in November. The holiday season is typically a very slow time in the industry as many shops and suppliers shut down. That shutdown period has coincided with the beginning of our procurement phase, which means we did a little more waiting than we would like in between holiday celebrations but there was still plenty of work to do. Thankfully, we are starting the year off strong with our first parts deliveries already arriving, putting us one step closer to building Laguna Prototype 1.

The vast majority of work completed since our last update revolves around manufacturing 200+ machined components that really put the “bespoke” in Shoreline Bespoke. These custom parts form the basis of what will make the Laguna so incredible to drive: a clean-sheet design with motorsport-grade engineering and the finest quality hardware. We’ve been sending out engineering drawings for each SBV-designed part, where we define critical measurements to ensure the Laguna’s components work together perfectly. These detailed drawings are required for every bespoke component - some of them with dimensional tolerances less than the width of a human hair!

We’ve been working on every facet of the Laguna to deliver the ultimate analogue experience, and the gauge cluster is no exception. A car’s speedometer is a defining part of its character, from the child peering through the window to see how high the numbers go, to the racer double-checking their corner entry speed.

This prototype speedometer dial is laser-cut from aluminum with brass numerals and can be painted or anodized to suit each owner. The dial has also been laser etched to emboss the text and locate the numerals. We can’t wait to get our hands on the first set of gauges and look at those watch-like dials behind a steering wheel!

Lastly, I am excited to share the first components to arrive in Santa Monica. Pictured below is our custom steering rack made by Woodward, a Wyoming-based company that supplies steering systems for the most demanding applications in the world including LeMans, CanAm, and GT racing. They were an integral part of our development process to ensure the Laguna driving experience is unparalleled, in no small part due to its hydraulically assisted power steering. The hand-finished rack is assisted by a remote servo that will allow us to tailor the steering feel to perfection. The power-assisted rack also allows us to run an extremely responsive steering ratio without risk of driver fatigue - just as useful on track as it is while parallel parking.

That’s all for now! We are eagerly awaiting the arrival of the rest of the components needed to begin building the prototype chassis, which we expect to have in the next month.
