Winter Updates

(This newsletter was previously sent out to our email subscribers. To receive updates the moment they happen, consider subscribing via our home page.)

We took a slightly longer pause between our last newsletter as commercial activity typically slows down during the holiday season. We also got to celebrate two birthdays: the Shoreline Bespoke founders turned 30! Celebrations aside, we’ve been busy growing our supplier relations, conducting an engineering audit on the car, revising a few necessary parts, and designing a stunning set of gauges to round it out.

We take a unique approach to engineering excellence: after finishing the initial design phase in-house (which for now is just Kyle and myself), we audit our design through our engineering partners to ensure every system and component is optimized. The audit took place over the last month and led to a few small changes around the car.

The engineering audit resulted in changes to the uprights (the part that attaches the wheel to the suspension), the seat and pedal mounts, and the air intake assembly for the engine. Now we’re ready to start building Prototype 1 and more excited than ever!

Our second area of focus was building our supplier network. This is an important process to complete as soon as possible for two reasons: it allows us to quickly identify who can supply components that fit our specification and it provides us with the ability to gather data on those components - either by receiving CAD from our suppliers or by receiving an actual component and modeling it ourselves. Last month I picked up the first Öhlins coilover that was specially built for the Laguna by our supplier, and then I spent ~20 hours with a digital caliper taking measurements and creating a CAD model to ensure the damper fit perfectly in the space we designed. This is just one of many components that we have transferred from physical to digital in order to ensure fitment and accuracy of our CAD model. The less surprises during vehicle assembly, the better!

We also moved to AP Racing for brakes. Our 15” center-lock wheels have more in common with a formula car than a road car. Our original plan called for Brembo motorsport calipers used in Formula 3. As it turns out, they were too sensitive to salt and moisture. Fortunately, AP Racing was capable of delivering a brake package for the Laguna that fit inside our wheels while delivering ultimate all-season braking performance. AP also supplies brakes for the fastest car in the world: the Bugatti Chiron SuperSport!

And finally, some interior updates. I have found that many car enthusiasts also have a strong interest in wristwatches. Like collectible cars, the world’s finest watches pair stellar design with cutting-edge technology, and the watch face is the first thing most people notice when fawning over a high-end timepiece. We wanted to take a page out of the watchmaking book by giving the Laguna an instrument cluster that could stand on its own as a piece of art. Furthermore, the gauges needed to comply with our race-ready requirements: the driver must be able to take in all the information they need with a split-second glance. This is just as important in a 24-hour race as it is to remain undistracted on the highway. The speedometer and tachometer will take a central location just behind the steering wheel, and the Laguna will also come with water temperature and fuel level gauges in the same style.
